(Holding of the 6th CPRC Osaka Symposium)

Today, I would like to introduce the Osaka Symposium to be held by the Competition Policy Research Center (CPRC) on Friday, March 15.

The theme of this symposium is "Generative AI and Competition Policy ~ What is the Role of Competition Policy Toward Further Innovation? ~." Today, generative AI has been rapidly spreading on a global scale, of which the foundation model has dramatically evolved and related services have launched in succession, such as image generation, search, and chatbots. Under such circumstances, how generative AI will impact the competitive environment is one of the grave interests from the viewpoint of competition policy. In fact, at the G7 Joint Competition Enforcers and Policymakers Summit held in November last year, the competition authorities discussed competition issues related to generative AI. Also, various activities of competition authorities have been seen in the world, such as the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the U.K. Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), the European Commission and so on.
At the beginning of the symposium, a senior official of JFTC (SHINAGAWA Takeshi, Senior Deputy Secretary General for Policy Management, JFTC /Deputy director, CPRC) will take the stage to introduce the JFTC's perspective on competition policy issues related to generative AI.
Next, following experts will provide lectures and panel discussions on various issues, including trends in generative AI, the impact of generative AI on the competitive environment, and the future direction of competition policy.

(1)Those who see business practices and the competitive environment related to generative AI from a legal perspective; practitioner (TAKAMIYA Yusuke (Partner, Mori Hamada & Matsumoto)), legal scholar (FUCHIKAWA Kazuhiko(Associate Professor, Graduate School of Law, Osaka Metropolitan University)), and overseas researcher (Ariel Ezrachi(Professor, University of Oxford)[online participation])
(2)Enterprises engaged in the development and use of generative AI; Microsoft Corporation (Christina Shin (Asia Competition Law Lead, Microsoft Corporation)) and SB Intuitions Corp., subsidiary of SoftBank Group (TAMBA Hironobu (President & CEO, SB Intuitions Corp.))

This symposium will be held on Friday, March 15 from 14:00 to 16:50 at the venue near Osaka Station (Hotel Monterey Osaka). It will be held with simultaneous Japanese-English interpretation, and you can also participate online. We are currently calling for participants, and the registration will be open until Friday, March 8 at 17:00 on the website of the CPRC.
