The Role of Competition Policy in Promoting Entry and Industry Dynamics
December 1, 2008
Competition Policy Research Center
The Competition Policy Research Center of Japan Fair Trade Commission (CPRC/JFTC) will hold the international symposium in close collaboration with the Center for Economic Institutions of Hitotsubashi University, NIKKI Inc. and Fair Trade Institute on January 23.
Importance of the role entry plays for market competition has been recognized increasingly. In reality, however, entry barriers are substantial in many industries, weakening the competition-promoting effects of entry. Also, entrants often face formidable post-entry technological, marketing, financial, and other obstacles that endanger their survival. In this situation, it has to be the responsibility of competition policy to eliminate unreasonable entry barriers and unfair exclusionary behavior of existing firms. However, by no means is it easy to clarify what entry barriers do exist and other questions. Theoretical and empirical evidences are hardly sufficient, and scholars and policymakers are often divided.
It is to promote more understanding of this important issue that JFTC/CPRC holds an international symposium on "The Role of Competition Policy in Promoting Entry and Industry Dynamics", inviting as keynote speakers three internationally renowned specialists on entry barriers and on entrants' behavior and performance, and holding a panel discussion inviting two more people.
