Generative AI and Competition Policy ~ What is the Role of Competition Policy Toward Further Innovation ? ~
February 13, 2024
Competition Policy Research Center
Generative AI is a type of AI (Artificial Intelligence) that can generate various contents such as texts and images in response to queries or instructions. As the performance of generative AI has dramatically evolved, such as image generation, search, and chatbots, generative AI has been rapidly spreading on a global scale.
Under such circumstances, how generative AI will impact the competitive environment is one of the grave interests from the viewpoint of competition policy. In fact, at the G7 Joint Competition Enforcers and Policymakers Summit held in November last year, the competition authorities discussed competition issues related to generative AI. Also, various activities of competition authorities in the world have been seen, such as the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the U.K. Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), and the European Commission, which have instigated market research, solicited opinions from public and so on.
Considering above, this symposium will invite experts as well as a foreign Big Tech and a domestic company developing and deploying generative AI, to have presentations and hold panel discussions. The panelists will discuss domestic and international trends in generative AI, impact of generative AI on competitive environment, and future direction of competition policy.
