The Role of Competition Policy in the Development of East Asian Countries

International Symposium

January 13, 2010
Competition Policy Research Center

The Competition Policy Research Center of Japan Fair Trade Commission (CPRC/JFTC) will hold the international symposium in close collaboration with Hitotsubashi University Global COE Hi-Stat, NIKKEI Inc. and Fair Trade Institute on February 19.
Compared to USA, several European countries, and Japan that started competition laws (anti-monopoly law) more than a half century ago, other East Asian countries started such laws more recently and are still working hard to accumulate sufficient experience to operate an effective and efficient competition policy.
In these and other developing economies, there are a number of issues that differ significantly from those in early developing economies. There are also a number of issues that are prominent in developing countries besides the fact that these developing countries started development efforts more recently and under different circumstances. With this difference in mind, this Symposium aims to discuss competition policies in East Asian countries today.
For this purpose, we will invite researchers with knowledge on competition policy from four East Asian countries. In Part 1, we will ask each participant to speak about the present situation and problems on the country's competition policy. In part 2, using the panel discussion format, we will discuss common issues in developing countries among panelists and Japanese commentator.
