"The state of transportation mode competition -An analysis of business traveler's choice behavior- " (2009.9)
Kaoru OKAMURA (Researcher, Competition Policy Research Center, JFTC)
This study has target to reveal the business traveler's mode choice behavior when a business tourist is intended to travel between two cities where the degree parts 300 km and to evaluate the status of competition between transportation modes. To analysis that, I estimated the business traveler's demand function from Kagoshima to Fukuoka, using a person-trip data, to examine the state of the competition among the rail, the air and the coach.
From the business traveler's demand analysis between Kagoshima city and Fukuoka urban area, the rail, the air and the coach are competing in boarding time each other. The result implies that when the Kyusyu SHINKANSEN (Kagoshima route), high- speed rail way, opens in whole line in the future and the boarding time of train is shortened, the demand shift from other modes to the rail will be large.
