"Law and Economics on Barriers to Entry" (2009.10)
Koki ARAI (JFTC, Head of CPRC Secretariat)
In this survey, we look at the meaning and practical use of the “barriers to entry” concept, including the discussion of competition policy at Japan and OECD, analysis in economics, and the judgments of the US Supreme Court.
The concept of barriers to entry is easy to use as a classification of drawing a specific situation rather than as a theoretical definition. Other usage is to classify the causation, progress, or symptoms for a specific phenomenon. Therefore, it should be discussed and utilized with a full understanding of what “barriers to entry” really mean.
