Competition authorities (e.g. UK CMA and EC DG-COMP) and international organizations (e.g. IMF and OECD) have recently examined state of market competition with paying attention to concentration. Learning from such studies abroad, we focus on Japanese manufacturing industries to investigate how market structures and concentration have changed over time. We use establishment-level data from the Census of Manufacture over the period 2002-2019 to cover all establishments with 4 or more employees including not only large firms but small and medium-sized firms. Main findings of this study include that concentration has risen by 4% over the period and the number of firms has significantly decreased by roughly 100,000, of which more than 90% are small firms. We also found heterogeneity of trends across firm sizes and sectors. |
