The Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) today issued cease and desist orders and surcharge payment orders to the department stores which own retail stores in Kinki region. The total amount of the surcharge to be paid is 193.97 million yen.

JFTC found that they substantially restrained competition in the field of delivery of seasonal gifts which the department stores sell at their retail stores in Kinki region with some preferential treatment, by exchanging information about the delivery charge of seasonal gifts, and agreeing to raise the charge to about 300 yen.

* “Kinki region” means Shiga, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo, Nara and Wakayama prefectures.
*“delivery charge of seasonal gifts with some preferential treatment” means the delivery charge of gifts listed on seasonal catalog used only in mid-summer or year-end, which the department stores receive from their customers when commissioned to deliver gifts to addressee and, the price of which is fixed all over the country.
