The JFTC Issued Cease and Desist Orders and Surcharge Payment Orders to Manufacturers of Aluminum Beverage Cans and Steel Beverage Cans

Japan Fair Trade Commission

Today, the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) issued cease and desist orders and surcharge payment orders to (1) two manufacturers of aluminum beverage cans (Universal Can Corporation and Toyo Seikan Co., Ltd.), and (2) two manufacturers of steel beverage cans (HOKKAICAN CO., LTD, and Toyo Seikan Co., Ltd.).
These manufacturers violated the Article 3 of the Antimonopoly Act. The total amount of the surcharge is about 25.724 billion yen.

JFTC found that these manufacturers substantially restrained competition in the fields of the cans to be sold to certain customers by agreeing to maintain prices of the cans.
