JFTC renders cease and desist order against misleading representations on eyeglasses by HOYA Corporation

The JFTC, having investigated into HOYA Corporation(Tokyo, Japan), today issued a cease and desist order against violation of Section 4 Paragraph 1 of the Premiums and Representations Act

1. Outline of violation

 HOYA has made following misleading representations on made-to-order lenses (36 types) for eyeglasses which HOYA claimed to have coated ("Siplus Coated ") to enhance impact-resistance.

A representation in a catalgue list for lenses:

"'Siplus Coat' makes a strong film on the both side of a lens and absorbes a shock. It makes the lens several times tougher than taraditional ones"

On the company's webpage:

"Several times tougher than taraditional ones", "Shock absorbing Siplus Coat"
Fact:

Part of the products were not processed with Siplus coating.

2. Content of elimination measures

i) Notification to consumers on the misleading representations.
ii) Adoption of measures to prevent reccurence and its familiarization to the directors and employees

iii) Ban on misleading representations to consumers in the future
