Recruitment of Fixed-Term Lawyers

Today, I would like to talk about the recruitment of fixed-term lawyers.

As you may be aware, the JFTC is undertaking various initiatives while considering the rapid and irreversible economic and social changes, including the advancement of the digital economy. Furthermore, as Japan moves beyond its prolonged economic stagnation and aims to achieve a “virtuous cycle of growth and distribution,” the JFTC is working to improve trading conditions across various sectors to ensure fair competition and facilitate appropriate distribution through well-functioning markets. To effectively implement these initiatives, the JFTC is strengthening its framework in both quality and scale.

As part of this effort, the JFTC has launched a public recruitment for 38 fixed-term lawyers, with applications opening on Monday, February 17. Specifically, the selected candidates will be assigned to the Economic Affairs Bureau, the Trade Practices Department, and the Investigation Bureau. The JFTC has previously hired fixed-term lawyers, primarily for law enforcement-related tasks. However, this latest recruitment is the largest ever.

The JFTC has jurisdiction over the Antimonopoly Act, the Subcontract Act, the Act on Improvement of Transactions between Freelancers and Undertakings (Freelance Act), and the Mobile Software Competition Act. Fixed-term lawyers will work alongside JFTC staff members in law enforcement, merger reviews, policy planning, and litigation. By leveraging their expertise, they will contribute to the proactive advancement of competition policy.

Fixed-term lawyers will have the opportunity to enhance their expertise in competition policy through these assignments. The experience gained at the JFTC will undoubtedly be valuable in their legal careers after completing their tenure. Additionally, we expect that as these fixed-term lawyers pursue careers in various fields after their tenure, they will help foster a broader understanding of the JFTC’s role and the importance of competition policy in Japan’s economic and social landscape.

Applications will be accepted until Friday, March 21. We encourage those who are interested to consider applying. For further details, please contact the Personnel Division of the Secretariat.
